My name is Jesse Garcia and I'm a proud Texan who is working hard for progressive causes.
One of the best things you can do for your community is volunteering. Giving yourself, your time and your skills to help out a non-profit, a cause or a person will fill you with a sense of purpose and make your community stronger.
I want to help both of my communities - the Hispanic and the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) Community achieve full equality.
The Hispanic Community is faced with underrepresentation in government, fortune 500 companies, academia and the voting booth. These factors have contributed to the marginalization of a community. From English-only laws, to ending "Birth-Right Citizenship," to racial profiling, anti-Hispanic legislators and organizations have targeted families whose ancestors inhabited the hemisphere before they arrived on the Mayflower.
Some of the same opponents that have attacked the Hispanic community work against the LGBT community. They have championed laws in the state of Texas that effectively made LGBT people second-class citizens. LGBT people have fought in our battlefields, been the best educators, inventors, artists, and doctors and they may even sit right next to you in your place of worship.
We are different, but we still have the right to be equal.
